Back in town

I had a wonderful time in Asia. Thanks for everyone who helped me learn some Japanese.

The only bad thing about it was it made me less content with Canada.

Now I want to move to Japan...arrrrgg.

Japanese / English Pen Pal

In order to help with my Japanese speaking and comprehension I've started looking for a Japanese pen pal. I hope to find someone who I can exchange emails with and they can help me with Japanese and in turn I can help them with English.

I don't know how to write in Japanese so everything would have to be done in English and Romaji.

If you're interested or know of someone who is, please drop me a line at team@teamunited.com

Kon'nichiwa

It looks like I'll be heading off to the the Far East this November. One of my stops will be Japan so I've decided to learn as much Japanese as I can. Plus, it gives me an excuse to watch the entire Shogun series again.

I've been fascinated with ancient oriental culture since I stumbled on the game Nobunaga's Ambition for the equally ancient Nintendo Entertainment System. I remember scouring (as in - vigorously searching, not as in - livestock diarrhea) the little Book Mobile that would pull up by our school, looking for any books on ninjas, samurai, or the Bushido code. That first love has never gone away. Recently I devoted a lot of time to the art of Bonsai. After killing everything I touched, I decided that the region I live in is clearly not hardy enough for my elite Bonsai skills.

On this trip I hope to gain some design inspiration. The Japanese style of minimal clutter to deliver maximum impact really appeals to me. We'll see if any of it can rub off on me. At very least it will fulfill a life long dream. By the way, if you hear about a Japan wide die-off of Bonsia trees sometime in November...

WCAG 2

Joe Clark at A List Apart has a good article on the proposed changes to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Just a few highlights I picked out:

You can still use tables for layout.

[WCAG 2] imagined a parallel universe in which the vast majority of web content ceased to be plain-Jane HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It envisioned a world in which lots and lots of Flash, PDF, and other, as-yet-uninvented formats were available and intended to be accessible. To accommodate this dreamworld, WCAG 2 was written and rewritten and rerewritten to apply to everything. Along the way, it lost the ability to apply to the real things real developers work on every day—plain-Jane HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

The article is detailed, but worth a read, if you're interested in the proposed standards.

Google Analytics

A few interesting trends I've noticed from Google Analytics on this site:

Screen Resolution
Over 80% of visitors are using a screen resolution higher than 800x600. That's great news. I dream of throwing off the shackles of 800x600 just like we did with 640x480.

Screen Color
100% of visitors are using 16 bit or higher screen color. Say goodbye to ugly web safe colors!

Blog
Almost 20% of visitors come to read this blog. Does that mean I have to update it more? Or does it mean I have to have something worthwhile to read? That sounds too much like work :)

Also I noticed a few people were looking for blogger templates. I've made my share of them and I enjoy doing them. If you need a custom blogger template done please drop me a line at team@teamunited.com.

Slow news day

Been busy lately redesigning www.emkap.com. This was real fun site to work on. The client wanted a Mad Hatter theme with an emphasis on purple. I'd like to think we delivered. Making the door mouse in the tea pot graphic was a lot of fun.

Here's a little fun site for turning your web site into a graph. Fun, yes. Useful, not so much.

Also, I'm testing out Google Analytics. I'm hoping this will be a powerful tool for seeing how users interact with your site. I'll let you know my impressions after I've given it run through.
